…an in-house development

The 1000 bar permeation cell is an innovative in-house development from Mecadi that has been specially designed for demanding permeation tests in the field of hydrogen and pressure vessel technology. It not only meets the relevant CSA/ANSI CHMC 2:19 and ISO 11114-5:2022 standards, but also goes beyond them with modified technical details and improvements to characterize plate materials at high pressures and/or high temperatures with regard to permeation.

Why 1000 bar?

Hydrogen technology is becoming increasingly important in the development of sustainable energy sources. Materials for the production of tanks, pipes or seals are the basis for a hydrogen infrastructure. Today’s high-pressure gas storage tanks usually operate at 350 to 700 bar. In development, even more extreme pressures of up to 1000 bar are being sought in order to further increase the storage density. In this context, the tightness and safety of the materials and containers used, especially under extreme conditions, are of crucial importance.

Permeation measurements at > 350 bar, as they occur in modern hydrogen storage and transport technologies, are essential to assess the suitability of materials for handling hydrogen under pressure. Due to its small molecular size and high diffusivity, hydrogen tends to diffuse through many materials, which can lead to safety risks and efficiency losses.

The determination of permeation characteristics at high pressures ensures that materials meet the requirements for tightness and long-term stability. In addition, material selection, design and costs can be optimized to maximize the safety and efficiency of hydrogen storage and transport systems.

Mecadi 1000 bar permeation measuring cell

Individual advice: Our team is on hand to advise you on the best test methods for your specific materials and requirements.

Detection limits and recommendations

The detection limits for permeation measurements in the Mecadi high-pressure measuring cell are specified in the relevant standards and depend on the test method, test medium and test material. Please contact us to discuss your specific application.

Requirements for your samples

To measure in the Mecadi 1000bar cell, we need samples with a diameter of 78-80 mm.

It is important that the sample is representative of the material and has no faults or defects.

Thickness variation < 5%, roughness r(a) < 20 μm.

We are happy to determine the thickness of the sample for you in accordance with ISO 4593.

We realize sample cuts from larger containers by cutting, punching, laser cutting, water jet cutting (external).

For tissue-containing samples, we offer additional cut-edge masking to prevent false-to-low false results.

We recommend sending at least three independent samples per test. We usually measure samples with a thickness of 20 µm to 3 mm. Other thicknesses are also possible on request.

Test media

We offer a wide range of different test gases and liquids in order to be able to react flexibly to your request. These include, for example

Standard: hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, helium, argon, krypton, etc.

Specialties: NH3, H2S, Cl2, HCl, SF6, NO, NO2, short-chain alkanes, etc.

Test conditions

The Mecadi high-pressure measuring cell is specially designed for use with hydrogen under extreme conditions. Alternative test media can also be realized. We will be happy to advise you on specific requirements or mixing ratios.

For material use in a specific application, the permeation data should be selected as close as possible to the operating point of the application (pressure, temperature).

Our laboratory enables us to carry out permeation tests at temperatures ranging from -50 °C to +150 °C.

Our all-rounder for demanding applications

Our permeation measuring cell was specially developed for the precise measurement of flat samples and is suitable for analyzing plates and films. The optimized design of the cell enables cross-method use: measurements using the pressure rise method or carrier gas method as well as the volumetric method can be carried out without any problems. This enables permeation characterization over many orders of magnitude.

Thanks to a specially selected steel alloy, measurements are also possible with corrosive media. Our standard test cell allows measurements at pressures of up to 100 bar. The modular design also enables coupling with sensitive analysis devices so that polymeric high-barrier materials can also be characterized.

100bar permeation measuring cell from Mecadi – precision, flexibility and reliability

The first prototype was developed over 20 years ago. Since then, the test cell concept has been continuously developed and optimized, particularly with regard to dead volume, response behaviour, detection limit, extension of the pressure and temperature usage window.

The test cell is versatile and can be used to reliably measure a wide variety of materials under realistic test conditions. These include soft elastomers, mechanically demanding films with and without coatings as well as solid polymer sheets with and without mineral fillers such as glass fibers, carbon fibers and other fillers. In addition, the cell conforms to a large number of common standards in the field of permeation measurement.

The standard version of the test cell covers a wide temperature range from -50 °C to +150 °C. This range can be extended both upwards and downwards by making appropriate adjustments.

Mecadi laboratory service

Determining the gas permeability of plastics is a decisive factor in the selection and development of materials. We offer you various methods for determining permeation – including measurement using the so-called carrier gas method (also known as the “purge gas method”).

This procedure is based on the test standards DIN 53380-3 or DIN 53380-S or ISO 2872:1977. In addition to the standard conditions, we offer a wide pressure and temperature range for individual testing.

The test cell consists of two chambers that are separated by the material to be tested (e.g. film/plate) (see schematic diagram below). One chamber is filled with the test gas, e.g. hydrogen (so-called feed side), while a carrier gas, usually air, flows through the opposite chamber. The permeation of the gas through the material leads to an enrichment of the pentrant in the carrier gas flow. By quantitatively analyzing the penetrant in the carrier gas flow, the permeation rate of the material can be calculated if the carrier gas flow rate is known.

Schematic representation of the measurement set-up for determining permeation using the carrier gas method.

The advantages of our service

Precise measurement results: We offer you accurate measurements of permeation rate/coefficient and diffusion coefficient based on recognized standards such as ISO 15105 or CSA/ANSI CHMC 2:19.

Flexibility in test conditions: We offer a wide range of test conditions, including variable temperatures (-50 °C to +150 °C) and pressures (up to 1000 bar) to meet the specific requirements of your project.

Advanced tests: In addition to the standard measurement of permeability, we also offer more advanced tests, such as the determination of diffusion coefficients, gas solubilities (sorption and desorption).

Individual advice: Our team is on hand to advise you on the best test methods for your specific materials and requirements.

Detection limits and recommendations

The carrier gas-based permeation measurement offers high sensitivity and enables the determination of permeation rates for films / sheets from approx. 3.0E-04 to 3.0 E-03 cm 3 day -1 bar -1 (0.1 to 1 cm3 m-2 day-1 bar-1). The specified rates refer to a partial pressure difference of 100 bar or 10 bar. The specified detection limits may deviate for components / hollow bodies / pipes.

Requirements for your samples

For a precise measurement, we need your samples in a format that meets the standard requirements (circular cut-outs with a diameter of at least 100 mm, or DIN A4 sheets). For standard measurement, we require samples with a diameter / edge length of at least 90 mm.

It is important that the sample is representative of the material and has no faults or defects.

Thickness variation < 5%, roughness r(a) < 20 μm.

We are happy to determine the thickness of the sample for you in accordance with ISO 4593.

We offer sample cutting from larger containers by cutting, punching, laser cutting, water jet cutting (external).

Mecadi laboratory service

Determining the gas permeability of plastics is a decisive factor in the selection and development of materials. We offer you various methods for determining permeation – including measurement using so-called manometry (also known as “pressure rise measurement”).

This measurement method is based on the ISO 15105 or CSA/ANSI CHMC 2:19 test standards. In addition to the standard conditions, we offer a wide pressure and temperature range for individualized testing.

In essence, the method describes a procedure for determining the gas permeability through flat plastics such as films, film webs, laminates, co-extruded or coated materials with the aid of a partial pressure difference.

The test cell required for this consists of two chambers that are separated by the sample to be tested (e.g. film/plate) (see schematic diagram below). One chamber is filled with the test gas, e.g. hydrogen (so-called feed side), while the opposite chamber is evacuated. The permeation of the gas through the material leads to an increase in pressure in the initially evacuated chamber. The permeation rate of the material is calculated from the pressure increase rate.

Schematic representation of the measurement setup for determining permeation using manometry.

The manometric permeation measurement offers a high sensitivity and enables the determination of permeation rates from 50 cm3 m-2 day-1. A reduction in test time and test costs can be realized, as far as possible, by using thinner materials and increasing the test temperature.

We realize sample cutting from larger containers by cutting, punching, laser cutting, water jet cutting (external).

Result units

Permeability per unit area (permeation rate): cm3 m-2 day-1 bar-1

Additional standardization to sample thickness (permeation coefficient: cm3 mm m-2 day-1 bar-1

Specification cm3 in standard state according to DIN 1343: Gas volume at 273.15 K (0 °C) and 1.01325 bar (1 atm).

Test conditions

For material use in a specific application, the permeation data should be selected as close as possible to the operating point of the application (pressure, temperature). For material characterization (comparison with existing / competitor materials), the test conditions of the standard should be used (pressure, temperature).

According to ISO 15105: 23 ± 2 °C at 1 atm partial pressure difference

Possible test temperatures at Mecadi

-10 to +100 °C (standard)

-50 to +150 °C (extended range)

Others on request, subject to technical feasibility.

Temperature profiles (non-isothermal measurements), e.g. CARB cycle

Test pressures possible with Mecadi

0 to 10 bar, absolute (standard)

0 to 100 bar, absolute (extended range)

0 to 1000 bar, absolute (on request)

Innovative material development

With the functional polymers we have developed, product properties can be specifically adjusted with minimal use of materials. Bonding catalyst complexes to polymers, for example, can extend the service life of catalysts or enable the realization of novel surface-active systems.

Highly volatile substances can be handled safely when chemically bound to polymers. In this way, polymer-bound substances can develop their effect in preparations without endangering humans or the environment. This technology makes it possible to achieve the objectives of REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) without the need for complex approval procedures.

Focus

Mecadi focuses on the development and production of polyvinyl alcohol derivatives and derivatives. Mecadi gives customers access to existing substance libraries. These contain derivatives with different functionality, degree of functionalization and molecular weight.

Mecadi manufactures the derivatives to customer order. Technical quantities can be produced by manufacturing partners. Mecadi also supports customers in application development, e.g. coating trials with the polymers.

In cooperation with the Karlsruhe Research Center, access to new polymer substances with unique properties has been opened up.
