It is a thermoplastic fluoropolymer, which consists of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and perfluorovinylsulfonicacid. TFE\/PVS was the first thermoplastic fluorocopolymer with ionic properties, which arise from the present sulfonicacid-moiety. Together with other polymers showing ionic properties it was registered in the new polymer class, the ionomers. The properties of TFE\/PVS result from the combination between the physical and chemical properties of PTFE and the characteristic properties of ions. TFE\/PVS is exceedingly resistant to chemicals and is attacked only by metallic sodium. The copolymer is also applicable in high temperature domains (190\u00b0C). In contrast to common PTFE, TFE\/PVS is highly ion conducting, wherefore it is employed as cation exchanging membrane.
